2024 Total Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse Viewing Safety

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the sun's bright face, also known as totality, and day momentarily turns into night. Being able to view such an event will be a once in a lifetime experience for many.

Looking directly at the sun without wearing the right eye protection could cause serious damage to your eye's retina.

Don't risk it! The only safe way to look at the sun during the eclipse is through special-purpose solar filters, like eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers.

Follow these tips to view the solar eclipse safely!

Safe FoodFood vendors are a big part of most large community events. While most food vendors are licensed, there is always the possibility of a pop-up vendor that has not been approved or licensed. If you aren't sure about a vendor, ask to see their food license before purchasing any items.

Septic Safety

Whether for the upcoming solar eclipse or any other large community event, if you have a septic system and plan to open up your yard for parking, be sure to protect your septic system. Do not allow vehicles to park on or near your septic system.

Questions or concerns? Call Environmental Health Director, Annie Butusov, at (330) 438-4641.

Viewing Do's and Don'tsKeep your eyes safe from the sun's damage at all phases of the eclipse both when viewing it and when capturing those special pictures.

Remember!! The ONLY time you can look at the sun without eclipse glasses safely is during the moment of total eclipse, when the moon completely covers the face of the sun for just a minute or so, and daylight fades to darkness.

Safe Driving Tips

Come early, stay late!

Traffic is expected to be heavy with all the excitement of the solar eclipse. Plan your route in advance and try to arrive early.

Be aware of your surroundings and especially watchful of pedestrians and children.

Plan to stay late to avoid getting caught in the rush of travelers leaving all at once.

Timeline

While Canton will not be in the 100% path of totality for the solar eclipse, we will experience close to 97% totality. This timeline covers the beginning of the eclipse through the end.
