Mold spores are what fungi produce to propagate themselves, often by dispersing them through the air. Factors such as the concentration of spores, the particular spores involved, and individual sensitivity can cause people to suffer from the symptoms of allergy or asthma. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology ranks mold levels on the following scale:
1-6499 spores/m3 -Low: only individuals extremely sensitive to these molds will experience symptoms.
6500-12999 spores/m3 -Moderate: many individuals sensitive to these molds will experience symptoms.
13000-49999 spores/m3 -High: most individuals with any sensitivity to these molds will experience symptoms.
>50000 spores/m3 -Very High: Almost all individuals with any sensitivity at all to these molds will experience symptoms; extremely sensitive people could have severe symptoms.
