Fight the Bite!

The Canton City Health Department needs your help in protecting yourself and your family from mosquito bites.

Mosquitoes can transmit West Nile Virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus and many other life threatening diseases.

The best way for you to avoid being bitten by a mosquito, and being exposed to West Nile Virus and many other diseases, is through self-protection.

Three Ways to Reduce your Risk of Mosquito-borne Disease:

Three Ways Canton City is helping to reduce your Risk of mosquito-borne disease:

1.     Working with home owners and businesses within the City of Canton:

a.     To remove all sources of standing water

b.     To collect information on dead birds and heavy mosquito populations

2.     Applying a larvicide to any standing bodies of water that cannot be eliminated.

a.     We will primarily use a larvicide called Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti). It is not chemically based but contains bacteria that will kill mosquito larvae before they can grow into an adult.

                                                 i.      Please see the following link for more information: http://www.mindfully.org/GE/Bacillus-thuringiensis-Bt.htm

b.     We may also use a larvicide called Altosid Briquets.  This works by releasing a natural pheromone that prevents the mosquito larvae from growing into an adult.

                                                 i.      Please see the following link for more information: http://www.myadapco.com/productsearch.asp?type=1

3.     Only as a final measure we will be applying an adulticide.  Adulticides must come in contact with the mosquito to kill them.  The types we use are in the form of a spray that you will typically see and hear dispersed from a Canton City marked pick-up truck.  Since mosquitoes are most active in the evenings, we typically spray from 8:00 pm to 1:00 am.

a.     Please see the following link for more information on the products we use:

b.     Be aware of when your area is being sprayed by referring back to this website for updated schedules and by reading the local newspaper.
