The Canton City Health Department offers the following information for a parent/care giver to protect your children from lead poisoning. Have your children been tested for lead? Lead poisoning often shows no symptoms. Testing should be done at one year of age and at yearly intervals until the child reaches age six years. More frequent testing may be needed depending on the results of the lead test. Consult with your child’s medical provider about testing your child for lead poisoning. Having a blood test for lead is the ONLY way to know if a child is lead poisoned. ALL CHILDREN AGES SIX YEARS AND YOUNGER IN OHIO ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A BLOOD LEAD TEST. Ages one through three years are considered the most likely time that a child will become lead poisoned. Check with your local health department about lead testing as they may offer free or reduced cost lead testing. The Canton City Health Department offers FREE lead testing for Canton children. The clinic is offered the first and third MONDAY each month from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The method to obtain blood samples is a finger stick. The blood sample is analyzed in the Canton City Health Department laboratory using modern, accurate equipment. Results are sent to the parent/care giver, usually in about 10 days. |
