LEAD SAFE RENOVATIONS

Use lead safe practices when remodeling or doing maintenance that disturbs possibly leaded paint. These include:

  1. Use wet sanding /scraping to remove deteriorated paint. Wet sanding/scraping creates far less leaded dust which can be spread to other surfaces. For large areas such as the side of a house, wet the surface with a garden hose to dampen the paint. We do not recommend power washing as this can spread leaded paint chips over the yard and on to adjoining properties.

  2. Use drop cloths/plastic to catch paint chips from your project and dispose of them in the trash.

  3. For interior projects, contain the remodeling project from other areas of the home by taping plastic sheeting on floors, over door ways, heat registers and cold air return ducts.

  4. Clean the work area using a phosphated detergent solution when the job is complete or at the end of the work day.

  5. Vacuum the area with a HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner.

  6. Do not allow young children or pregnant women into the work area or containment area until a through cleaning of the area is complete.

    NOTE:
Paper masks purchased at local hardware stores DO NOT protect you from lead dust. A HEPA filtered mask is the best protection. Any mask purchased should be fit tested to the users face to ensure that the wearer is protected. Failure to wear a properly fitted mask will not give you any protection. Look under the “Occupational Health Services” listing in your local phone book for companies that perform this service.

  1. When hiring a company to do remodeling to your home such as window replacement or other remodeling that disturbs painted surfaces, write lead safe practices into the work contract.

Consider hiring a licensed lead abatement contractor to perform the remodeling work. Prices charged have declined and stabilized in most markets over the last few years and are not much higher than the cost of using a non licensed contractor. Contact the Canton City Health Department at (330) 489-3327 for a list of local lead abatement contractors in the Canton/Stark County Ohio area. For other areas of Ohio, contact the Ohio Department of Health at 1- 877 NOT- LEAD for a list.
