How To Protect Yourself from Influenza

Flu can be a dangerous disease.  We can expect 34,000 to 36,000 deaths in the United States during a flu season, which usually begins in late October and lasts through early spring.  It is important to obtain a flu vaccination each season because the flu viruses change yearly.

Flu shots are offered by health departments, private physicians, and local retail outlets such as pharmacies.

Contact your private physician or health department to determine if you are eligible for a flu shot.

Everyone is encouraged to follow influenza-prevention recommendations:

  •  Avoid close contact with sick people.

  •  Stay home if you become sick with the flu.

  •  Use disposable tissues when coughing and sneezing.

  •  Wash hands frequently, especially after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

  •  Get sufficient rest and exercise.

  •  Maintain a healthy diet.
