Stephen Hickman, D.V.M.

Serving as President of the Board of Health of the City of Canton is Stephen Hickman, D.V.M.  Born and raised in Portsmouth, Ohio, Dr. Hickman graduated Magna Cum Laude from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts.  He served active duty in the United States Air Force for four years and active reserve duty for an additional six years. 

Dr. Hickman graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978, where he received the Oscar V. Brumley Award for Leadership and Scholarship.  He began practicing veterinary medicine in Buffalo, New York until 1982 when he moved to Canton.  He established Mellett Animal Hospital in 1984.  In addition to serving the City of Canton on the Board of Health, Dr. Hickman has provided veterinary care for the Canton City Police Department K-9 Unit since its inception.

Dr. Hickman has served his profession as the long-time Treasurer of the Stark County Academy of Veterinary Medicine and he is a member of the National Association of Public Health Veterinarians.  He is President of the Jackson Township Historical Society and is an avid scuba diver, motorcyclist and racquetball player.  He also enjoys designing and making furniture.

His tenure with the Board of Health spans more than 20 years and his current term ends in 2017.
